You play melodies by pressing keys which change the note of the melody strings. Secular music was made up of folk songs and ballads, many of which were sung by wandering musicians called troubadours. The Hurdy Gurdy is a fascinating medieval musical instrument. MEDIEVAL MUSIC: There were two main types of music - secular and religious. The date range in this article is the one usually adopted by musicologists. Establishing the end of the medieval era and the beginning of the Renaissance music era is difficult, since the trends started at different times in different regions. This era begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century and ends sometime in the early fifteenth century. Part of this connection was established through music.
