The nuclear bomb thing was so controversial that when they released the game in Japan they just removed that option from the game.įallout 3 was a huge hit becoming Bethesda’s top selling game ever. There was even detonating a nuclear fricking bomb on a state. When Bethesda received copies of what Black Isle Studios was working on as Fallout 3… they knew they could do nothing with it.Ī copy of Fallout 3 was leaked online and many people played the Fallout 3 demo that Black Isle Studios was working on well before the official Fallout 3 was released.īethesda strapped their engine on this game and told another story in the world of Fallout, 20 years after the story of Fallout 2.įallout 3 was so controversial it lit the news on fire. Fallout 3 was already in the works from Black Isle Studios that were working under Interplay this whole time. They were also finishing up work on Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion which would be their next rising star.īethesda took the rights to Fallout simply because, they were fans of the game. They had developed the wildly popular Elder Scrolls: Morrowind a dashing success. Interplay was going through tough times and in light of going bankrupt they sold the rights to the intellectual property of Fallout to Bethesda Studios.īethesda was a rockstar in the RPG world. But no matter what mud they would drag their coveted IP through… it was not enough. Interplay would do whatever they could to stay open including releasing two Brotherhood of Steel (a faction of Fallout) games and a hack and slash console Fallout title. At least, not enough sales to keep Interplay afloat. The fact that a game profits during this time is a miracle.įallout 2 would release the next year and would receive very strong praise but not be rewarded with insanely high sales. But this was the world of 1997 when very few games were doing all that well. To be fair the game has shown up on a lot of high profile best games of all time despite not selling too hot. But what it did do is attract a niche audience that would demand more. don’t even realize what they missed out on.įallout upon launch was not a dashing success. SPECIAL was something they were forced to develop because a DnD system they wanted was copyrighted and the owners of it did not want them to use it. You would take turns fighting your enemies and at the last turn the winner was decided by who has better stats as defined by S.P.E.C.I.A.L.Įvery letter in SPECIAL gives a specific stat you can boost in the Fallout series. The Fallout series was a 2D isometric computer game that offered an RPG system of play. Contact with anything beyond America is almost impossible as people have broken down to a world of MS DOS and wired communication. There are various new factions showing up trying to take over the United States of America. The politics of pre-war are not too defined, however the politics of post war are. The game starts off in a world a little after World War 2 where technology has rapidly developed and eventually the world goes to war and blows itself up. So many studios (including EA) were trying to make the next great post-apocalyptic RPG. So I played this game with a gamepad just because… any console port sucks without a gamepad.įallout is initially developed by a studio called Interplay based on another post-apocalyptic title they had released previously. Unfortunately during this time I was pretty much not playing a lot of ‘mainstream’ video games because well… they’re all console ports. This is one that I was pretty excited about because at least for consoles it was a pretty highly anticipated title. So over the holidays (Christmas holidays that is) the entire Bethesda library went on sale, so I pretty much picked up every single Bethesda title. ![]()
